Urgent Help Needed
One thing that I learned very quickly upon moving to Australia is that the number for emergency services is “000.” This was important because I have young kids and in the US we use 911. When you are desperate straits just know that prayer is what you should use to call for help. Just know that God hears and answers the prayers of His people.
David is in one of these situations and prays desperately for God’s help (70:1,5). This psalm permeates a sense of urgency (“hasten to my help”). He needs God’s help now! David says that he is a victim in a situation that is not of his choosing (“afflicted” in 70:5). He is completely dependent upon God for help (“needy”in 70:5). Have you ever been in a situation like this?
David prays that his enemies would be dishonoured and defeated (70:2-3). They seek his downfall. They take great delight in his hurt (70:2); they gloat and taunt him, expecting his destruction at any minute (70:3). Brethren, know that like David, you will face people who will delight in your hurt and hate you because of, or in spite of your godly living.
David knows that God’s deliverance will relieve his situation and give the righteous cause to rejoice (70:4). David describes believers as those who: seek God, rejoice in God, and love God (70:4). Does this describe you? Do you seek God in prayer? Are you satisfied in Christ , and rejoice in what He provides? Do you love Christ more than anything else? Then like the saints of old, continually praise the Lord for His great salvation (70:4)!
Brethren, pray with confidence in your dire circumstances. Know that God is your “help” and “deliverer” (70:5)!
