PSALM 46 (Part 2)

God is Our Refuge

I do not need to tell you all that we are living in chaotic and unpredictable times. Without purpose and hope, people live enslaved to their fears. Psalm 46 is a remedy for the chaos, as it points you towards God when you are in the midst of hard circumstances.

God is the believers refuge, strength, and help in times of trouble (46:1). In light of these truths, the psalmist says that there is no reason to fear. The mountains may come crashing down, the seas may roar and the world may be in chaos; yet the believer can have confidence in God (46:2-3).

God is present to comfort His people. His protection and provision are like a flowing river (46:4). For the people of God, their source of security is in the reality of God’s presence (46:5). Even if the nations rise up against God’s people, they will not be shaken (46:6-7). There is deliverance and help when circumstances seem the darkest. A new day will dawn after the darkest night (46:5).

Believers can have hope in all circumstances because final victory belongs to the Lord (46:8-9). In the future God will bring an end to wars and destroy all war making equipment (46:9). All peoples are told to cease all their tumult and recognise that God is sovereign (46:10). This is the future hope of the believer. The wicked will be judged and God will be exalted in all the earth (46:10).

The future belongs to God alone. Those in communion with Him can rest in this hope, even in hard times you can take comfort that nothing is outside of His knowledge and control (46:11).
