There are three spheres of authority that God has established in the world we live in. They are the Family, the Government, and the Church.
In regards to the family, he husband is head of his household and accountable to God for his family (Eph 5:23-24; 1 Cor 11:3). Each family is to make decisions based on Scriptural wisdom and personal conscience. If these matters are preferential issues, and not sinful or harmful, then the church nor government has the authority to interfere.
Christ has also given the government a specific sphere of authority that all individuals must submit to (Rom 13). To not obey the government, outside of spiritual matters, is tantamount to rebellion against God (1 Peter 2:13-15). The role of the government is to administer justice and promote societal good(1 Peter 2:14). The great temptation of government is to become tyrannical by exercising authority not designated to it by God. This includes intruding into all aspects of their citizen’s lives, and trying to regulate church practices. The government does not have the authority to change or deny Christ ordained practices and forbid the gathering together of the church in worship. Christ is Lord of the church, not Caesar.
Christ has also established His church to glorify Him through corporate worship, godly living, and through evangelism. He has instructed His people to gather themselves together for mutual service and edification around the word of God on a weekly basis (1 Cor 16:2; Heb 10:24-25). Christ has also established practices that the churches are to follow: Baptism (Mt 28:19), Communion (1 Cor 11:23), Singing songs of praise (Eph 5:19-20), and the public reading and exposition of Scripture (1 Tim 4:13).
In all three areas the goal of Christ is a well ordered society that glorifies God.
