Faith Overcomes Fear
In Psalm 64 David is struggling with fear. He is keenly aware that evil people are scheming ways to bring about his downfall (64:2-4). They gather in secret councils (64:2) and are ready to insight a tumultuous mob with their bitter speech to accomplish their purposes (64:2-3). They are poised to strike suddenly, and have no fear of any consequences (64:4-5). They are proud and confident in their “well-conceived plot” (64:6).
What does David do in the midst of such dire circumstances? He does what all believers must do? He turns to God in prayer. David begins with a cry to God asking for three things. He asks first of all, that God would hear his prayer and respond immediately (64:1). The verb, “hear,” shows there is a sense of urgency to his request. He looks around and hears his enemies plotting his downfall, and he needs help immediately from the Lord. Brethren, in fearful times do not be afraid to ask for for help.
David then asks that God would guard him from his fear of evil people. It is his fear of the enemy and what they may do to him that is his greatest threat (64:1). He asks God to guard him so that the schemes of the wicked will not continue to have an effect on him. Brethren, only God can help you to overcome your fear of man.
Brethren, true contentment arises from resting in the providence of God. David knows that God is his protector (64:7-9). He knows God will turn their evil schemes against them (64:8). His faith in God is strong. He longs for the day of God’s judgement, for the world will respond in reverential fear of God and the righteous will respond with gladness (64:9-10).
