How Majestic is Your Name In All the Earth!
One of the things that I love to do is stargaze at night. As I look up into the heavens I can’t help but be humbled at my own insignificance at the sheer vastness of space. In Psalm 8 the psalmist has this same response. He praises God for His great majesty and splendour displayed in His creation (Ps 8:1); and then feels his own insignificance as he stares into the sky at night (Ps 8:3). He cannot believe that in the infinite beauty and power displayed by God in His creation, He gave mankind such an exalted position. Mankind was given dominion (rule) and authority by God over all of this world at the very beginning of creation (Ps 8:6-8); Gen 1:28). They were to manage and direct creation as they saw fit, all in accordance with God’s will. Sadly, mankind forfeited their place of dominion when they rebelled against God (Gen 3). With this act of rebellion sin and death entered he world, bringing chaos and evil (1 Jn 5:19; Rom 8:19-22). Praise be to God that He did not leave mankind in this poor state (Jn 3:16). It is through the Son of Man that creation is freed from this chaos. At His exaltation, all rule and authority and power and dominion have been given to Jesus (Eph 1:20-21). When Christ returns with His people mankind’s exalted position will be restored as we rule and reign with Him (2 Tim 2:12 ). We can join with the psalmist in praise, “O LORD, our Lord How majestic is Your name in all the earth!”
