Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” John 4:10
This week whilst driving in the car with Noah and playing a CD of his favourite songs, I couldn't help but take notice of a few well-known lyrics… “There’s water, water of life, Jesus gives us the water of life”.
The ‘water of life’ or ‘living water’ is perhaps one of the greatest illustrations used by the Lord Jesus Christ in His ministry. In John chapter 4, Jesus is sitting at the well with the Samaritan woman. He says to her in verse 10, “If you had known the gift of God and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me water to drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
What is the gift of God here and what is the living water? It is salvation, and everything that it encompasses—God’s mercy, God’s grace, the pardon for our sins, His forgiveness, our justification, and our glorification. Once you receive this water, once this water is placed in you, it flows forever and ever. It is a well of water that never dries up. It’s the only water that forever quenches the thirsty soul, freely given to all who would ask for it. Just as we need water to live daily, we need the God’s living water for eternal life. Have you received the living water this morning?
