IDENTITY CRISIS?

Therefore as you have received Jesus Christ the Lord, so walk in Him. Colossians 2:6

One of the pervading issues that plague our society is that of identity. By this I mean, people of all ages are ever searching, experimenting and trying to be someone or something other than who they presently are. The poor man seeks greater wealth, the wealthy man seeks what money can’t buy, the lonely man seeks company, the socialite seeks peace and solitude, the street kid wants to be someone with a home, the spoilt rich kid, wants to break out and be free.

All of these social issues arise from people wanting to fill a void in their own identities because of an inbuilt dissatisfaction of who and what they are.

So, why is this an inbuilt human reality? Our identity as people begins bad because we are all sinners by nature - born that way. That’s the real issue behind humanities identity crisis. We only identify who we are with what we are and we are sinners - out of sorts with God - “for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3.23). This means we will only ever be unsatisfied with who we are, no matter how much we attain, we will fall short of being completely satisfied with our identity!

We need God to reconcile us to Himself by His grace through faith in Jesus Christ. (Eph. 2:8)  Only when we are reconciled to God can we think & live life being completely satisfied with who we are, no matter what the circumstances.

All true believers - those who have been reconciled to God through faith in the cross work of Jesus Christ are God’s eternally blessed children. He is our all in all. Our identity now finds its roots in Jesus Christ. All else becomes unsatisfactory.
