“and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32
What a challenging message we heard last Sunday! How true it is - the freedom culture loves to applaud and advance, believers can easily become entangled in its deceptive charm. This cultural concept of freedom is all about serving self, pleasing self and having nothing that would hinder or bind us to any higher authority. But as we know, no matter what plans or schemes man may try - that kind of freedom is fleeting, at it’s best and is the greatest lie! The reason? Mankind is bound and enslaved to a higher authority who dictates the terms of their present and eternal existence. The reason? Mankind, through Adam’s rebellion against God, switched sides. Adam was created with a heart that willingly and freely served and submitted to God’s loving authority. Adam and Eve were completely free in that state. But through his sinful rebellious choice, he plunged all mankind into a sinful state that now looks for freedom in every worldly way possible but never finding it. So what is the answer to our dilemma? “God being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ….” (Eph. 2:4-5)
The truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ is the only truth that sets us free.
May we who have been set free by God’s grace through faith, not be seduced into living like the slaves of sin (Rom. 6:17-18) which the culture demands of us. May we live as “slaves of righteousness” and enjoy God’s personally designed freedom, which only He can give to each one of us.
