He is also the head of the body; the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he Himself will come to have first place in everything. Colossians 1:18
The above text is in reference to Jesus Christ. But please note the tenses used in this verse. Twice it is stated what Jesus “is” before we have an eschatological reference introduced by the word “will.”
In other words, this verse tells us that because of who Jesus is, He “will” be absolutely supreme in everything that exists. Because by Him and in His power, “all things hold together” (Col. 1:17) He “will” rightfully rule as the supreme ruler of the universe in a day yet to come. This is when “every knee shall bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil. 2:10-11).
Let us as believer’s who are a part of the body of Christ treasure and value Jesus Christ - above all - for He alone is worthy!
Augustine once said: “Jesus Christ is not valued at all until He is valued above all.”
